Oedipus the King

Why does the worst happen to the best? I am not really sure but I believe that god has a lot to do with it. He treats us as equals no matter how rich or poor we are. No matter how good or bad we are. There are many things that we cannot control that happen in life. Sometimes it is just fate.  Oedipus’s tragedy was something he had no control over.  He didn’t know that the man he killed would later turn out to be his father and his wife, his mother.  The gods controlled his fate and no one else. This is what we believe in, that god controls our fate. How else can we explain it?  We can’t always explain why such things like this happens to people most of the time its just fate, and it was just meant to be. Bad things happen to innocent people because they have to; just because you are innocent doesn’t mean bad things won’t happen. Bad things happen to everyone, and it’s just a part of life. It’s a way god test us to see how we cope with these tragedies. Bad things are obstacles that gods throws at us to remind us that we are, all still human.

Dickinson

Emily Dickinson grew up in Amherst Massachusetts in a very strict household.  She lived mostly her entire life in isolation. She loved to read and was inspired by many other poets in her life. Dickinson’s poem, “Because I could not stop for Death” (1),was written about 1863. This was written towards the end of the American Civil War.  Emily Dickinson had a lot of time to think and thought about death very much during this time.  Even though they were in the North, they had lost many close friends to the war.  Emily Dickinson had strong Puritan beliefs, which shows in the first stanza of this poem, “Because I could not stop for Death” (1). It says that she accepts death, which is a part of life, and cannot control it. The belief to live on forever in the after life shows up also in the poem when Dickinson describes the carriage, “The Carriage held but just Ourselves - And Immortality” (3-4).  The poem’s tone is very depressing and it almost seems that Dickinson was ready to die too, especially when she describes how the person was dressed in the poem, “For only Gossamer, my Gown – My Tippet – only Tulle-” (15-16). Because of her isolation maybe she thought of death as being pleasant because the description of how the person was dressed. It actually describes a person who was going to a dance instead of a funeral.

"They say that God is everywhere, and yet we always think of Him as somewhat of a recluse."

My English "B"

It’s harder than you think!
Writing a poem, thinking of all those words.
It is made to seem so easy.
Thinking of all the right words,
It isn’t easy.
Everyone makes life seem easy
But life isn’t made so easy.
Living out near by the water
Driving to and from school is such a bother.
Making it just in time to get to class,
And working hard to get a good grade to pass.
Trying to past time until I’m free,
Just to notice I have a class until fifteen after three.
Hoping the professor doesn’t show so I can leave early,
And go.
Go to hit some balls off a tee
I know this is me.
Dead and tired in great pain
With a continuous aching migraine.
Finally finish, done, I need to hurry
Hoping to be home before seven thirty.
This is just the beginning
No one said life was easy.
